Human Rights Summer Research Fellowship
ATHER ZIA
Ather Zia is from Kashmir. Her research interests lie in the issues of conflict, media, gender and human rights. She has two Masters Degrees, one in Mass Communication and Journalism from Kashmir University and another in Communication from Cal State University Fullerton. For her summer project she will investigate the women’s agency within the political formations that are manifested in the civil society processes against human rights abuses in Kashmir. She intends to explore and understand how women pursue such processes, how they frame concepts of peace and justice, their distinctive approaches to human rights and how they negotiate in locally meaningful ways, implications of the gender role for the future of the region and if there is any reconfiguration in the patriarchal nature of the society.
